The Reading Room has had a long standing partnership with ‘Libraries for Timor Leste’ a donor group of Librarians in Melbourne. There is no local publishing industry, but the printing industry does a roaring trade… you can get anything copied, be it a 300 page book or a 10 page art catalogue, and at a reasonable price. There are also some materials in the local Timorese dialects. Some of the Children’s picture books and early learners books in Tetum are designed and produced in Australia and made available online free of charge for anyone to print and photocopy. The collections in the library are in four main languages, Tetum, the local language, Portuguese, English and Indonesian. Timor is off the beaten track and expensive to visit so those making the trip usually find themselves laden with requests to bring hard to get or unavailable items. My school friend from Opotiki, Anne Larkey visiting the Museum on a whirlwind tour of Timor.
